And suddenly, it's June

June 5, 2018

"Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August." - Jenny Han

And suddenly, it’s June.

June is the month that arrives at your front door, insistently knocking while you scramble to your feet and scurry to answer it. June is the month that you are almost always surprised to see. ‘You’re here already? Yes, I knew you were coming, but…’

June means we are nearing the halfway point of the year. You might be thinking one of two thoughts at this moment:

Halfway? Whew, thank heavens I’m on track.

or

Halfway? Yikes! I better get my butt in gear.

Summer means a mindset shift for most of us. For some women leaders, it’s your high season, so business and life shift into full throttle crazy. But for many, the demands of business and life are a little less. And that downshift opens up just enough space in the brain to allow creativity to fill it. If that’s the case for you, consider taking advantage of this mind-shifting magical time between June and August.

“Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.”

- Dee Hock

That is what Jennie decided to do. When she contacted me, it was apparent that Jennie was on a serious mission. Jennie runs two companies and a non-profit. Summer is her ‘slow time,’ and she wants to get her book written. Yes, that’s right, finished by September 1st.

It’s an aggressive timeline for sure, but I believe Jennie is up to the task. She realizes that summer is her magic time. She travels less, and business slows enough to put some flex in her schedule. So this summer, she’s jumping into that opening with both feet.

But back to you. As a high-achiever, you probably find yourself halfway through vacation when you begin to get an itch. Not from bug bites or that peeling sunburn. But an itch to accomplish something. Don’t get me wrong, working your way through every concoction on the tiki bar menu by the end of the week is an accomplishment. But you need something more.

Reading a good mystery or adventure novel is entertaining, but it is still not the sense of accomplishment you need. Oh wait! I know just the thing. How about writing a good adventure story? How about writing your story? You may not have the time to finish your book this summer, but getting it started, organizing your ideas and making progress will give you a sense of satisfaction like nothing else.

My colleague Sue was struggling to get her book started. During a summer vacation with her husband, the ideas just started to pop. The change of scenery and distance from her business opened up just enough space in her brain to let the creative juices flow. She returned home with a refreshed mind, a tanned bod, and ten chapters of her book outlined.

And suddenly, it’s June. What magical things will happen for you between June and August?

I’d love to hear about your summer plans and your book idea. Grab some time on my calendar and let’s get you ready to write your story.
